Sample mechanical engineer resume for Victor Nguyen, a fictional person, in the Compact layout. The names, employers and numbers are invented.

What to put in the summary

State the product area (HVAC, automotive, medical devices), the design stage you work in and your tools (SolidWorks, ANSYS). Add the standards you design to. Engineers are hired on specifics, so name them.

Mechanical design engineer for industrial pumps, with five years in SolidWorks and FEA. Takes parts from concept to production drawings, and has cut cost on three components without changing performance. EIT certified.

Example summary, written for a fictional mechanical engineer.

Sample bullets with numbers

Name the product, the target (cost, weight, tolerance) and the result. Engineering hiring managers like specific numbers and tools.

  • Redesigned a pump housing in SolidWorks, reducing machined parts count from 7 to 4 and unit cost by 12%.
  • Ran ANSYS stress and fatigue analysis on a new impeller; the design passed validation testing at the first attempt.
  • Produced 180+ drawings with GD&T for suppliers, with a first-pass acceptance rate over 95%.
  • Led root-cause analysis on a seal failure affecting 3% of field units, identifying a tolerance stack-up and issuing a drawing change.
  • Worked with the manufacturing team to cut assembly time on one product from 52 to 38 minutes.
  • Built a test fixture for pressure cycling that was later reused on two other programmes.

These numbers are invented to show the shape of a good bullet. Use your own, and leave a number out rather than guess.

Key skills to list

  • SolidWorks
  • ANSYS FEA
  • GD&T
  • Design for manufacturing
  • Root-cause analysis
  • Pressure systems
  • Materials selection
  • Test planning
  • PLM (Windchill)
  • Python for data

CAD and analysis tools first, then standards and processes. Include EIT/PE status with year.

Common mistakes

  1. Describing projects as “team-based” without your contribution.
  2. Forgetting cost or performance targets.
  3. Listing every CAD package ever opened.
  4. Putting education above experience when you have several years of work.

Mechanical Engineer resume questions

Should I list my PE licence or EIT?

Yes. Put them near the top, with the state and year. EIT status shows you are on the path.

How do I write about confidential projects?

Describe the product type and your role without naming the client or revealing specs. Percent improvements are normally safe.
