What to put in the summary
Say whether you sit in corporate finance, FP&A or investment analysis, how large the business or portfolio is, and the tools you model in. Add one line on how your work reached decision-makers; finance managers hire people who can explain a number.
FP&A analyst for a $180M consumer products business. Three years building monthly forecasts and variance commentary in Excel and Adaptive, supporting the CFO’s board pack. Forecast accuracy improved by tightening drivers, not by adding complexity.
Sample bullets with numbers
Name the model, the decision it supported and the accuracy or dollar effect. Estimated savings are fine if you say they are estimates and how you got them.
- Rebuilt the revenue forecast on volume and price drivers, improving 3-month forecast accuracy from ±9% to ±4%.
- Wrote the monthly variance commentary for six cost centres, shortening the review meeting from 90 to 40 minutes.
- Modelled three pricing scenarios for the top 40 products; the chosen option added an estimated $1.3M gross margin a year.
- Consolidated 11 regional budget files into one linked model, removing a week of manual copying from the annual budget cycle.
- Prepared the quarterly board deck financials for a $180M business, reviewed with the CFO.
- Built a cash-flow view for the treasury team that flagged a covenant pinch point two quarters in advance.
These numbers are invented to show the shape of a good bullet. Use your own, and leave a number out rather than guess.
Key skills to list
- Financial modelling
- FP&A
- Excel (INDEX/MATCH, Power Query)
- Adaptive Planning
- SQL (basic)
- Variance analysis
- Budgeting and forecasting
- Power BI
- Scenario analysis
- Board reporting
Say what you model, not just that you model. “Three-statement model” and “driver-based revenue forecast” are specific; “financial analysis” is not.
Common mistakes
- Quoting dollar impact with no explanation of how it was estimated.
- Listing Bloomberg, FactSet and Capital IQ if you have only seen a demo.
- Skipping the scale of the business, which tells the reader what your numbers mean.
- Describing reports prepared but not decisions informed.

Financial Analyst resume questions
Do I need the CFA or an MBA?
Not for most corporate FP&A roles, where models and communication count more. The CFA matters for investment roles. List a credential you hold or are sitting, with levels passed.
How do I show modelling skill on paper?
Describe the structure and the outcome: drivers, scenarios, accuracy. Offer to share an anonymised model sample at interview if asked.
