Who it suits
Academic is for researchers, graduate students and anyone applying to universities, labs and research roles. It centres the header, uses a serif throughout, and sets section headings in a style that suits long lists of publications, presentations, grants and teaching. A CV can run to several pages and this layout stays readable.
How the layout works
- A centred header with your name, headline and contact line.
- A serif throughout, with academic-style section headings.
- Designed to carry long lists such as publications and talks.
- Black accent by default; one column in the order you set.
ATS notes
Academic is a single column with real text and no tables, so it is labelled ATS-safe. Many academic hiring processes are read by committees rather than software, so formatting for people matters more: consistent citations and dates.
When to pick something else
You are applying for a one-page industry resume. Choose Classic or Modern, and keep only the publications relevant to the role.
Tips for filling it in
- Use one citation style for every entry and bold your own name consistently.
- Put education first early in your career and move it down once you have a record.
- For industry applications, cut the publications list to the two or three most relevant.
Academic template questions
Can I use Academic for an industry job?
You can, but trim it. Industry readers want one or two pages of results, not a full publication list. Keep the layout and shorten the content.
How long can an academic CV be?
Much longer than a resume. Several pages is normal for faculty and postdoctoral applications; keep each section clear and dated.
